Reflections on Our February 2025 Cultural Yoga Retreat in The Gambia

Yoga Retreat Africa February 2025

Cultural Yoga Retreat in The Gambia

– with Alina Jaber –

I recently hosted my fourth retreat in The Gambia, and every time, I am reminded of the rich culture, deep traditions, and heartwarming experiences this beautiful country offers. From February 21st to 28th, 2025, our group had the incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in the wonders of West African culture, its people, and its natural beauty.

What stands out the most for me is the warmth of the Gambian people. There is a reason this country is known as the Smiling Coast of Africa. The moment you land, you are greeted by genuine smiles, heartfelt welcomes, and an openness that’s hard to find in the Western world. The people here always share their joy and kindness, making it impossible not to fall in love with the country. It’s this authenticity and happiness that draws people back to Africa time and time again.

Kololi Beach Resort: A Perfect Sanctuary

As always, Kololi Beach Resort provided the ideal setting for relaxation. Surrounded by lush private gardens that stretch endlessly, guests could always find their own quiet spot to reflect, unwind, and connect with nature. The sounds of the ocean waves, the birds singing, and the sun shining created a peaceful atmosphere that allowed us to deepen our Yoga practice as the retreat progressed.

A Day of Giving Back and Exploring the Gambia

One of the most impactful experiences of the retreat was our 4×4 drive to a local school and a tribal village. Our group had come prepared to give back to the community, bringing juices, snacks, and stationery for the children at the school. We then stopped at an eco-tourism camp, where we strolled through beautiful vegetable gardens, did some birdwatching, and explored the sustainability-focused tourist camp. The highlight of this stop was the raw beauty of the place, with treehouses nestled in nature.

Our next stop was the Jola Tribe village. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted with traditional dance and drumming, inviting us to join in the rhythm and learn their moves. We also brought bags of rice, oil, and lollipops for the children, which were received with much gratitude.

The day continued with a boat ride on the Halahin River, situated between the borders of The Gambia and Senegal. Cruising in the local boat through the mangroves, we saw many exotic birds and at the end of the journey, we were welcomed by locals who offered us refreshing jelly coconuts. Arriving to Halahin Lodge, we indulged in a traditional Gambian buffet, feasting on local dishes after a long day of exploration. We wrapped up the day with some relaxation on a secluded beach, where some guests dipped into the Atlantic Ocean, while others took long strolls along the untouched shore.

Immersing in Gambian Culture Through Cooking and Dance

Another standout experience was the home cooking session with Ida, one of my favourite parts of the retreat. We began our day by visiting the local Tanji fish market to pick up fresh ingredients, before heading to Ida’s beautiful home. There, we spent the day playing traditional games, engaging in a Bin Bin workshop, walking through her gorgeous garden, and learning about African herbalism. We even collected water from the well and visited an inhouse crafts market. All while, preparing a delicious traditional Domoda dish, which we shared together as a community once it was cooked.

After the meal, we were treated to an African dance class, which was a new addition to my recent retreats. It quickly became a guest favourite! We learned dances from four different Gambian tribes Jola, Mandinka, Fula, and Serer. The energy, the rhythm, and the joy of dancing with the group were infectious, making it one of the most fun and memorable experiences.

Free Time and Exploring Local Wonders

During the retreat, guests had free time to unwind and enjoy some of the local experiences, such as massages or Reiki therapy from me. Many also ventured out to explore the Monkey Forest and Crocodile Pool, where they learned more about local culture and saw some of the oldest trees in The Gambia, over 500 years old!

  A Life-Changing Experience

This retreat was about experiencing and connecting with African culture in its truest form. I am deeply grateful to each participant who joined me on this journey. Their openness, curiosity, and willingness to engage in both the yoga practice and cultural excursions allowed for profound growth and self-discovery. It is my hope that, through this retreat, everyone left with not just a deeper understanding of yoga but also a stronger connection to themselves and to the rich traditions of West Africa.

  Next Retreat Dates

I am already excited about next year’s retreat! Join me from February 3-10, 2026, for another unforgettable experience in The Gambia. I look forward to welcoming new faces and reconnecting with returning guests for another adventure that combines yoga, cultural exploration, and the magic of West Africa.
