Cultural Yoga Retreat in The Gambia
– with Alina Jaber –
As I reflect on our recent cultural yoga retreat in The Gambia, I feel huge gratitude for the experiences we shared and the vibrant spirit of this West African destination. Held from November 15–22, 2024, the retreat was a harmonious blend of yoga, cultural immersion, and pure relaxation.
A Warm Welcome and Outstanding Hospitality
Our home base is the Kololi Beach Resort, where we were treated as always to a perfect combination of comfort and tranquillity. Amani, as continuously, delivers exceptional meals featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients like fish, shrimp, and organic fruits and vegetables. The care and attention to every meal nourished both body and soul.
Daily Yoga in a Seaside Sanctuary
We were privileged to practice yoga in the newly built shala by the ocean—a serene, dedicated space that elevated our sessions. Morning yoga was a healing experience, with the waves and ocean breeze setting a peaceful tone for the day. Evening sessions at sunset brought a deeply therapeutic close to each day, leaving us feeling balanced and refreshed.
Reiki Therapy by the Ocean
This retreat was uniquely intimate, which allowed me to introduce one-on-one Reiki therapy sessions. Participants enjoyed their treatments on my Reiki massage bed in the shala, surrounded by the soothing sounds of waves and the songs of exotic birds that thrive in The Gambia. It was a profoundly relaxing and restorative addition to the retreat.
Cultural Adventures and Tribal Experiences
We ventured beyond the resort to explore the richness of Gambian culture. A 4×4 drive took us to Mandinka tribal village, where we were enchanted by men performing in traditional kankurang masquerade costumes. These vibrant outfits, deeply rooted in Gambian tribal traditions, are adorned with intricate patterns and accessories that symbolize spiritual protection and cultural heritage. Watching the performances was a rare and captivating experience that left a lasting impression on all of us.
Gambian Home Cooking and African Dance
Our retreat wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the lovely Ida’s home for the Gambian Home Cooking Experience. We prepared Domoda, a delicious peanut stew, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere of a traditional African market. While waiting for our meal, we participated in a special bin-bin workshop with my dear friend Aisha, who taught us about the art of seduction in African culture and celebrated the essence of femininity.
To top off the day, Aisha introduced us to a brand-new experience: an African dance class. We learned moves from four different tribes, which quickly became a highlight for everyone. The energy and joy of the class were infectious, and I’m thrilled to announce that this workshop will now be a staple in all my future retreats.
Local Shopping and Relaxation
We found time for some local shopping, supporting artists and tailors at Kololi Beach Resort. Many participants purchased unique arts, crafts, clothing, and jewellery, while others indulged in the peace and quiet of the resort’s lush gardens. With coconut drinks in hand and the ocean breeze on our faces, it was the perfect way to unwind.
Some guests took the relaxation further, enjoying foot and head massages on the beach or booking private treatments in their rooms.
A Full Immersion in Gambian Culture
This retreat was not just about yoga – it was a holistic journey into Gambian culture, offering participants a chance to connect deeply with the land, its people, and its traditions. The balance of yoga, cultural activities, and serene downtime created an unforgettable experience for everyone.
As I look ahead to our next retreat in February 2025, I’m excited to continue weaving these elements together, ensuring each experience is as meaningful and enriching as the last.
If you’re considering joining us next time, know that The Gambia’s vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and natural beauty will welcome you with open arms.
